Department of Civil Engineering

The Department was established in 1982, as Department of Civil Engineering and  Building Technology, six years after the establishment of the institution as College of Technology. The Department offered courses leading to the award of National Diploma in Civil Engineering and Building Technology, and Certificate in Construction Technology, when the institution was College of Technology. The Department took off with an initial enrolment of 43 students and three (3) lecturers and one (1) instructor on its staff.

    In 1980, by an act of Legislative bill, the then Sokoto State Government upgraded the College of Technology to a Polytechnic. Two years after the upgrade, there was an administrative re-organization which brought the college system into operation. Due to this re-organization, the Department of Civil Engineering and Building Technology was split into two departments, namely: Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Building. The certificate courses were later phased out and HND course(s) started. The first batch of National Diploma students passed out in 1980 and the first batch of Higher National Diploma students graduated in 1983.

   Presently, we have students for both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma courses, lecturers, technologists, technical officers and supporting staff both within and outside the Department.     

The Department has well-equipped laboratories for Structures, Hydraulics, Strength of Materials, Transportaion, Water and Soil Mechanics.
